During the National Games, Li Yongbo, executive deputy director of the Competition Committee and deputy director of the Table Tennis and Badminton Center of the State General Administration of Sports, was interviewed by reporters and expressed his views on the overall competition conditions, competition system disputes and badminton development of the National Games.
Q: Can you talk about your feelings about the games?
Li Yongbo: The National Games is very important for all provinces and cities, every four years. However, due to the particularity of the competition, the main players of the national team need to play their own main events in the local team. In addition, the team competition and the single event are held one after another. Although the organizing committee has tried its best to adjust the competition system so that the players can have as much time to rest as possible, due to the particularity of the competition, the physical energy consumption of the players is still too great, The players, especially the old athletes, it's hard for the players to take it in the next single event. International competitions are held separately for groups and individual events, but the National Games are put together. I feel that such an arrangement is too hard for athletes.
Q: Do you have any solutions or suggestions for this?
Li Yongbo: Personally, I feel that badminton still has too many points. We are now considering proposing to the World Badminton Federation to reduce the score of each game in the name of the Table Tennis and Badminton Center or the Chinese Badminton Association. Personally, I prefer to score 15 points per game, 2 wins in 3 games, or 11 points per game. This can greatly reduce the load of athletes.
Q: but many veteran players say that they will be slow to move. If they reduce their scores in each game, they may lose before they warm up. What do you think of this?
Li Yongbo: I think this is a good thing for old athletes, because it can reduce their load and extend their sports life. For the audience, it is also hoped that the competition will be fierce at the beginning, instead of seeing the athletes slowly looking for their state. Therefore, this National Games also makes us think about whether we can make some adjustments in the competition system, but this still requires extensive listening to opinions and brainstorming to promote favorable adjustments. Now, there are indeed too many international competitions. Many of our players are fighting on two lines, which consumes too much and is easy to cause injuries. This is the reason why many old athletes can't stick to the National Games.
Q: For example, Cai Yun (Weibo) fell off the beat?
Li Yongbo: I think this is very inappropriate. No matter what you think, such as unreasonable schedule and tiring, I can understand it, but the game is a game, and you should follow all the regulations of the game on the court. Especially as an athlete who is loved by everyone, an old athlete and a role model athlete, I don't think he should do this. I criticized him afterwards. In fact, Cai Yun should face the competition and the problems encountered in the competition in a more rational way. This is an excellent athlete.
Q: he is also a veteran player. After winning the London Olympic Games, Lin Dan has appeared more and more in a positive image. How do you evaluate his performance in this competition?
Li Yongbo: Lin Dan's steady performance in the past two months has shown that he is very respectable, and even his calmness on the court, I think it exceeds any of his previous stages. I have asked every member of the badminton team to learn Lin Dan's professionalism in training and fighting spirit in the game at the summary meeting of the World Championships. These two points are what the Chinese badminton team must learn and think about. Now, the sports world calls for scientific training, but in the process, many people ignore the hard training. In fact, scientific training should be based on hard training. If you only do science and don't want to spend effort and time to win the championship, this is impossible. Competitive sports is like this.
Q: Lin Dan said that he would continue to withdraw from the international arena for a period of time after the National Games. Has he made this request to you?
Li Yongbo: We talked about this issue. He basically decided not to participate in international competitions before the end of this year, because the competitions behind this year are super competitions, finals, etc. To participate in these competitions, you need to have enough points. With Lin Dan's current points It is difficult to directly enter the main competition in these competitions, and even the qualifying competition may not be eligible, unless the World Badminton Federation gives him a wild card in every competition, but this is impossible. Therefore, Lin Dan felt that he could not play anyway, so it was better to relax and adjust. From my point of view, I will help him develop a training entry plan in January next year, coordinate his competition and rest adjustments. On this basis, I think his next step is Brazil. Of course, if he wants to take this step, the intermediate process will be very important. If you only focus on Brazil but do not pay attention to the previous process, then you will not have enough points and will not be able to participate in the Olympic Games. This is a systematic project, not to say that it can be done at one stage.
Lin Dan is a responsible athlete. As long as the national team needs him, he will take responsibility without hesitation every time. This is why he deserves my respect. Therefore, everyone can rest assured that once Lin Dan chooses to come back and prepare for Brazil, Lin Dan will be present in all major team events.
Q: Would you like to talk about the topic of women's singles "first sister?
Li Yongbo: Yes, but I feel sorry whenever I talk about this issue. I also said before that the current competition arrangement makes athletes too much burden. The badminton event itself is very loaded. The World Badminton Federation still has so many competitions every year for athletes to choose or have to participate in. If they do not go for some reason, they will be fined. Therefore, some athletes who miss the competition due to injuries will find ways to make up for it in other places. Therefore, everyone's load is very large. Women's singles are injured one by one in this kind of overloaded training. I remember that three years ago, the Chinese team had six outstanding women's singles, but there was no "first sister". The advantage of this is that six people will go in hand and compete for each other. At this time, they will show the advantage of the group. But then Wang Lin (Weibo blog), Wang Xin (Weibo) and Jiang Yanjiao (Weibo) were injured one after another, all of which were caused by persistence in the case of extreme physical fatigue. In fact, scientific training means that athletes cannot train when they are very tired, and our women's singles have too much impact on injuries.
Q: After the National Games, many people still want to go to Changzhou Masters. Will it be very tiring?
Li Yongbo: Yes, but they may not all take part in the competition. If you feel that your physical fitness is OK, then take part. If you feel too tired to participate in the competition, you will not take part in the competition. You can take part in some badminton promotion activities in Changzhou, such as going to schools to promote badminton and participating in activities arranged by the organizing committee to interact with fans. Although I didn't play basketball, I think it is also a contribution to let the fans see them.
Q: When it comes to promoting badminton, the new season's badminton league is about to begin. What will the league do to promote badminton?
Li Yongbo: I think this year's Badminton Super League will give you a bright spot, that is, we try to adopt an 11-point competition system, so that on the one hand, we use our own way to promote badminton, on the other hand, it also minimizes the physical consumption of athletes. Under such circumstances, foreign athletes such as Li Zongwei and Schenck come to participate in the badminton super system and try a new 11-point system. If they feel that the 11-point system is better than the current system, then they will represent another voice and another force in the world badminton arena to promote the reform of the competition system of the World Badminton Federation. Our plan is to shorten the competition time, reduce the load of athletes, improve the intensity and appreciation of the competition, and facilitate television broadcasting and media publicity through the new competition system of 11 points. Of course, the competition has not yet started. I don't know what effect such a reform will have, but our original intention is to let more spectators, fans and players have a new experience of badminton through the reform. I think this is a bright spot.
